About Gorse & Quill.

i.Why we made it

Gorse & Quill began with a frustration every songwriter knows: the best ideas arrive at the worst moments, and the worst tools to catch them. A voice memo lost in a sea of voice memos. A lyric scribbled on a napkin and never seen again. A melody hummed once and gone forever.

We wanted something slower and more deliberate: a beautiful physical book to write in, paired with a simple way to capture the sound of an idea before it slips away.

ii.The Songwriter’s Ledger

The Ledger is a premium hardcover notebook designed by songwriters, for songwriters. Every page is built for the craft (space for lyrics, structure, and notes) and every song carries a unique QR code.

Scan a page with the companion app and you can record a take in the moment it strikes. Months later, flicking back through your old ideas, scan the same code to rediscover the recording exactly where you left it.

iii.The companion app

The Gorse & Quill app (iOS only) ties a voice recording to a page in your Ledger. No account, no analytics, no tracking. Your recordings stay on your device (and in your own secure iCloud backup, if you have iCloud Backup enabled); they belong entirely to you.

iv.Made in Scotland

Gorse & Quill is a small independent venture, designed and run from Scotland. The gorse is the hardy golden flower that covers our hillsides; the quill is the oldest tool of the songwriter. Together they capture what we are after: something rooted, lasting, and made by hand.
