It is a premium hardcover notebook designed for songwriters, with space for lyrics and chords. Each 4-page song spread has a unique QR code that links to the companion app, so you can attach voice recordings to any song. The Ledger also contains over 50 pages of songwriting reference materials such as chord progressions, circle of firths and songwriting prompts.

The Ledger is printed on 120gsm uncoated paper, with enough weight to take pen, pencil or a hard hand without ghosting through, and a matt surface built for writing rather than just reading. Pages are Smyth‑sewn, not glued, so the book opens flat and holds together through years of use. The cover is a casebound hardback finished with a matt lamination, which protects it from marks and everyday wear without any gloss glare.

Yes. As long as your Ledger is still unused, you're welcome to return or exchange it within 30 days of delivery, for any reason. Return postage is at your own cost, unless the item arrived faulty or damaged. Once a Ledger has been written in, though, it's yours to keep: a used notebook can't be resold, so we're not able to accept it back. See our Terms & Conditions for the full policy.

Open the free Gorse & Quill app and scan the QR code on any page of your Ledger. The app opens that page’s song folder, where you can record a take on the spot. Rescan the same code any time to play your recording back. The core recording features are completely free and always will be. Two optional in-app purchases add extra tools if you want them — both one-off payments, never a subscription: Advanced Mode (£7.99) lets you add reverb and record layers on top of existing takes, so you can stack parts or harmonies, and Video Mode (£3.99) lets you capture video as well as audio to record your performance.

The app is currently available for iPhone (iOS) only, running iOS 18.6 or later. An Android version is not available at this time. Beyond that, the only real requirement is a phone whose camera and microphone still work. That's all it takes to scan a code and press record.

Your voice recordings are stored locally on your device. They are never uploaded to our servers and we never see them. If you have iCloud Backup enabled on your iPhone, your recordings are included in your secure iCloud backup, so if you lose or replace your device, they can be restored along with the rest of your data.

If you do not use iCloud Backup, the recordings exist only on your device. Deleting the app or losing your device means they are gone, so back up regularly. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

No. There is no sign-up, no email required, and no tracking. The app works straight out of the box. We want to make it as easy as possible to capture your ideas as soon as they appear.

As much as we can manage. Every Ledger is printed here in the UK through our print shop, in small batches rather than one huge run, which means we're printing closer to what we expect to actually sell, not stockpiling boxes on the chance they might, and no copy has to cross an ocean to reach you. Across their production network, the paper is predominantly FSC-certified, sourced from responsibly managed forests, and printing runs on plant-based, vegetable-oil inks rather than petroleum ones.

It’s not a grand claim, just a considered one. Small runs, printed close to home, made to be sold rather than stored, from paper that comes from a forest built to keep growing back.
